My husband and I are planning to drive to Quebec from Chicago in the latter half of June 2015 and from Quebec down to Saugerties NY. We are both senior citizens. We most enjoy historical sites and local color. Any tips would be welcome.

It depends on how much time you have for the drive. I assume you won't want to spend any time in Montreal or Toronto, the obvious destinations on the way? If you're looking for quieter places, Kingston is a pleasant and historical city on Lake Ontario, half way between Montreal and Toronto. Just past Kingston is Prince Edward County, a near-island that juts out into Lake Ontario. I would recommend taking the Loyalist Parkway from Kingston to the Glenora ferry that takes you to Prince Edward County. You can spend a day there exploring the wineries, restaurants, orchards, and beaches - if that interests you. Prince Edward County feels like a world away from anywhere else. Gananoque is another option; it is just to the east of Kingston. It is popular in summer because of its access to the 1000 Islands. If you go to Chicago via Niagara Falls then, well, the Falls is another obvious stop-over. The whole region is known for its wineries and orchards - though much more developed than Prince Edward County. There are also many historical spots linked to the region's decisive role in the War of 1812.

Just to correct some info by ref-traveller.
Coming from Chicago you'll pass Brighton and Prince Edward County is just past there but BEFORE Kingston.
Driving on the 401 east, you would take exit 422 south toward Trenton to get to Prince Edward County.
If desired then take the Glenora ferry and head east TOWARDS Kingston !!!

Sorry. I had it in my mind that the trip was happening in the reverse direction for some reason.
