Hello fellow solo,

Traveling alone it's my experience that big cities and western countries are bad places for solo-traveling. Sometimes I really feel lonely because it's more difficult to catch up with others than in backpack countries. To my opinion other continents are far more attractive for solo-traveling. Do you agree or is it me?

To your experience: What are the best places (and/or countries) to meet other travelers.

Live Life, travel as much as you can.

If you want to meet up with other travellers just use a Lonely Planet Guidebook to direct you.

I found that Guatemala was a great place to meet and travel with other backpackers.

It's easiest to meet other backpackers where there's a definitive "backpacker circuit", like east coast Australia, or Western Europe, or Thailand. This can be both a good thing and a bad thing. Sometimes all I want to do is get away from the noisy Brits and Aussies drinking like fish and shagging each other in hostel dorms. Sometimes a backpacker party can be good for the soul after being off on my own for a while. Depends on my mood.

I found it really easy to meet people in Los Angeles but really difficult in New York and Boston. In LA I met a great group of people within 4 minutes of putting my bags down; in NY it seemed like a lot of the people at the hostel were really into doing their own thing and in Boston I didn't meet a single person I could go out with (although being there in winter didn't help). I've only backpacked in Western countries so far, so I'm hoping to have a bit more of a social connection when I tackle India/Asia later on. I guess a big part of it is luck - getting a great mix of people who are there looking to meet other people like you are.
