Hello

I'm due to spend 2 weeks at the beginning of September 2015 in Newfoundland. My wife and I like to travel independently, enjoy the great outdoors, hiking, adventure, touring around and sightseeing. We're both early 30s.

Nothing is booked yet, so open to suggestions, like starting in St Johns and ending in Halifax, focus on one part of the island instead of trying to squeeze it all in etc

Any GREAT restaurants, places to stay or experiences you can specifically recommend?

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on:

  1. Hire a car or RV? We enjoy both, but is one more suited to explore the region? Cost is not a major factor. Is St Johns the best place to hire vehicles or Halifax just as good? Is the available accommodation pretty dull and we're not going to miss anything by staying in an RV?

  2. Focus on Newfoundland or try to get to Labrador and Nova Scotia?

  3. Book everything ahead or play it by ear? Will things be booked up or can we tour around at our leisure with a rough plan and book accommodation a day or two ahead whilst we are there?

Many thanks
Ivan

i think two weeks in newfoundland is about right. i would fly into st john or deer lake and fly out of the other one. you'll have to pay a one way drop off fee (likely) but that's better then driving across the province again just to return the car. i think i'd rent a car and stay at b&b's or hotels. easier to get around and you might meet some really great people at the b&b's. accommodations may be easier to get in september but you need to remember, some are very spread out. i think i'd look at a few key areas i was going to stay in, find some b&b's that interested me and contact them to get their opinion on if you need to prebook weeks in advance or days in advance.
