Hi. I'd appreciate some feedback on my roadtrip itinerary for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI, from Ottawa. We will be two couples, each with an infant. We want to keep it fairly cheap. We have a free place to stay just outside Miramichi NB and just outside Charlottetown. Ideally, drives should not be over five hours.

1 overnight outside Quebec City
2 outside Miramichi (6.75 hrs from Quebec City)
2 in Halifax (4 hours from Miramichi)
2 in Cape Breton (4 hrs from Halifax)
2 in Advocate Harbour (Bay of Fundy, NS side... 5 hrs from Cape Breton...could go to Digby instead or in addition, since thats where whale watching is)
4 nights outside Charlottetown (5.5 hrs from Cape Breton)
1 night in Fredericton (3.5 hrs from Charlottetown)
could stop by Jacques Cartier national park (just north of Quebec city) and overnight closeby before going back to Ottawa

Thanks in advance!

What sorts of things are you interested doing/seeing? No matter what your interests, I absolutely recommend eating at a Lobster Supper at least once in your trip (barring allergies of course!). It probably won't be the cheapest, but they're worth the money and the food is amazing. There are great ones all over the maritimes, but it sounds like you know people in Charlottetown, so maybe ask them what their local favourite is.

I'm not sure how much road tripping the babies have done already, but remember that it can take a lot longer to get from A to B when travelling with a baby (when I was a baby it took my parents 2 days to make a 4 hour trip because I was so fussy and hated the car so much). As your itinerary stands, it seems to me like you're going to end up spending a lot of time packing up the car, driving to somewhere new, and unpacking the car again.

If you're looking to keep things cheap look into renting a cottage for the whole group instead of a couple of hotel rooms, you'll have more space and you and you can cook for yourselves. I'm not sure what the general policy for nightly rentals instead of weekly is like in the high season, but it's worth looking into.

i think you are trying to pack in too much. i'd drop cape breton from the itinerery. it really deserves 4 nights and best when the kids are older and can walk. switching accommodations that often is a pain. 4 nights in pei is good. i'd consider 3 nights in halifax and do a day trip to mahone bay / lunenburg or do 2 nights in halifax and 2 nights in lunenburg. save cape breton for another time.

Cape Breton has two options, Highlands (Cabot trail) and then industrial (Sydney). For two days I would stick to the Cabot trail. Two nights in cabins, split it up at different points along the trail then just drive right back out towards Halifax.

Sydney has a lot of charms, and driving there is beautiful (take Kellys mountain) and there are some shops and sights to see. Growing up near there personally I'd choose the trail.

There are cute resturants and shops along the way that are more what tourists are looking for.

Any questions feel free to send me a message!
