By my reckoning, this itinerary sounds pretty solid but would be interested to see what you guys make of it. Any tips on how feasible it is, bits I should be seeing but I have missed. I am travelling alone and am only 18 so no chance of car renting (everywhere i have looked says you must be 21!) Will be avoiding flights as much as poss and sticking to public trasnport (where available) and hitchhiking.

I remember going to East Africa and not listening to the advice to take sunblock before you go. As a tip to all the others on this branch, please don't make that mistake. Yes, you certainly do need the sunblock and yes, it costs so much more to buy it in country.
So then, could you all please tell me if I will need to follow the same advice for West Africa (Morocco, Mauritania, Sengal, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire)?

I am based in London and have just joined the forum.

I am thinking of going to Mali in June (specifically to Timbuktu and Djenne) and have a few questions, hopefully they can be answered by those who are familiar with the country or have been there before.

1) What is the weather like in June? I have heard that this is the rainy season. Does this make travelling unadvisable? Are there any positives to this - e.g. cooler temperature etc?
