Hi!

I’m planning to be in Victoria Falls at the end of March. I know the date is unfortunate but this is the only available time for me this year. I read that the main attraction - white water rafting - will be most likely closed at that time due to high water level. I also found out that falls spray makes photographing hard if possible at all. Can anybody advise me on other activities at this time of the year? I don’t think I will try bungee jump (I’m still not sure if I enjoyed my 1st jump from the Bloukrans bridge in SA:). I know I could take a helicopter flight. That would be at least the only opportunity to take some decent pictures of the falls, although not a cheap way.

Anything else? Parks? I wouldn’t want to miss out anything great.

Thanks!

You can go on a safari trip to Chobe, which is nearby.

Check out the following link for a list of activities, there is plenty to do there.

My personal opinion is that seeing the huge volume of water at that time of year and being soaked by the spray makes up for the lack of visibility. I definitely prefer the falls then rather than in August-September, when it's comparably down to a trickle.

I'm going to be in Southern Africa for about 7.5 weeks, if I make my way to vic falls I plan to look into this...

Thanks for the quick reply.

I can never have enough parks (I’ll be arriving from Iringa-Tanzania where I’m planning to visit Ruaha NP), although my concern is that parks like Chobe will be waterlogged in March. I‘m afraid it’s going to be not only inaccessible, but also animals would be harder to spot. But its only my guess...

@ missmullen09, ashellabaloo - Thanks for the links! Although the Zambezi swing looks as scary as bungee jumping I will definitely consider that. I find Zambezi canoe safari very tempting. It could make up for the white water rafting which will probably be closed. Plus, while canoeing, there is plenty of time to embrace the surroundings.

missmullen09, you made me a bit calmer saying more water more fun. I’m wondering if taking a short trip to the Zimbabwean side is worth it (provided that I would have to pay for another visa + park fees). I read many posts with different opinions, but I’m thinking which side would be better to avoid the spray and get a clearer view to take some quality pictures.

Does anybody know if the Devil’s pool is accessible in March/April?:)

Thanks for any help!

My personal opinion is that the Zim side is much better and definitely worth the visit. You get to walk along the entire length of the falls on the Zim side (again, you'll get wet, but it'll be worth it to be so close), whereas the Zam side you just stay down the one end.

You can do the walking safari in the Mosi-oa-Tunya where you can track rhinos and see loads of animals. You can also go for horse back rides or quad biking. During my visit I stayed at Fawlty towers and they organised all my activities for me. You can do Abseiling and the Gorge swing which is really fun. A day trip to the Chobe National Park is a must as you will see so many elephants and hippos! If you visit the falls you should view it from both the Zambian and Zimbabwean side.

Thank you all for the precious advice!

I will definitely visit both sides of the falls. Also, after checking the map I realized why it matters so much to see it on both ends. The water falls on the Zam side which makes it logic that the best view must be on the Zim side:).

Geckotraveller, i would love to do either walking or horse-riding safari. The main thing I didn’t like in my previous safaris was that I had to stay in the car for almost all the time (e.g. NgoroNgoro). To me it was more like a zoo:(, so i’m looking for something where I can feel more freedom and where I could embrace the environment. I’m not sure if I made myself clear enough...

But my question is, will the walking or horse-riding safari be worthwhile, given that it will still be the rainy season? How does it look from a practical standpoint?

Thanks again!

Hi Paulos

There is no doubt that March is not the best time of the year for game viewing. There will have been lots of rain, there is plenty of grass and water and the animals disperse. So it's harder to see game and there is less of it, but resident animals always remain in certain areas of different park. The African bush however is ever changing with the season and every season has its own magic, its not just about the animals, there is so much else to see. So I would say definitely still worth the trip, all the young animals are around at this time as well.

You have asked about which parks. The Zambezi National park in Zimbabwe is 56000 hectares in extent, it has suffered from the effects of poaching over the last few years but has now stabilized and the game appears to be on the increase again. It is a wild park that borders the Zambezi river. I would recommend going with a safari operator that can show you more than just Game and I would also suggest trying a half day walking safari. Discover Safaris is very good. The Zambezi river is magic at his time of year and I would recommend spending time on it. Either a canoe trip, one day or multiple day, where you actually stay out in the park on the banks of the river its awesome. Also try the various river cruises etc

You must visit the falls from the Zim side, although it will be very full there are viewpoints where you can look at the falls without getting drenched in spray, only once you get opposite main falls and danger point will you get absolutely soaked.

Rafting is reopened at Vic Falls. If you are lucky, maybe you can still do a rafting trip.
