hi there - can anyone please share any info/recommendations on how to travel from Lusaka to Siavonga/Lake Kariba? So far, the Eagle's Rest resort has quoted $200 each way! And car hire in Zambia appears to be about $100 a day. Should we just show up at Lusaka bus station and try to figure it out, or does anyone have any experience they can share? Thanks so much in advance for any advice!

From an old diary I see that we took a bus from Lusaka to the turn off for Siavonga (1.5 hrs) then waited about 1 hr for a lift to Lusitu, where we got transport in the back of a pick up on to Siavonga and got there in time for lunch.
From here to Kariba we got a lift to the border turn off, walked to the border (easy crossing) then walked down to and across the dam. We were lucky to get a lift up to Kariba town with a couple who had come to see the dam, as we'd seen no traffic at all until then. It would be a horrible walk if you were unlucky, as it's all uphill!

Yup, the prices are ridiculus and we did similar as the first poster: took a mini van from Lusaka to the Siavonga turn, hoped on another van going to the border and walked all the way down and up to Kariba town.
