(This is repost, tried to place in Zambia previously but seemed to go to general Africa)

In process of planning trip through Zambia, trying to decide between Lower Zambezi or Luangwe in June of 2011. Looking for recommendations for each/either based on personal experience and if anyone has a preference. I am mainly interested in game viewing, specifically large cats (arent most people).

Also, I have done some digging around and found flatdogs camp and wilderness camp which are definite options, anyone know of good budget safari operators (everything seems more lodge based than Tanz, which is my prior safari experience). I did find bongwe safaris, but have been unable to find any feedback online about the company.

Thanks in advance...

I have stayed at Flatdogs twice and will be back there next month. It's a great place with good guides, nice restaurant and facilities and I would highly recomment it. I have always been lucky enough to have great sightings, including leopards on almost every night drive and lions on most drives as well.

Hi

I havent been to Lower Zambezi NP, so I cant comment on that. I was in Southern Luangwa NP at the end of august and absolutely loved it. Very "african", pretty "wild" and not a lot of tourists. Flatdogs looks like a good and not to expensive place, but its also outside the National Park (meaning that you have to drive into the park for game-drives and are not staying right "in there". I stayed at two camps within the Park and it was great. They are run by a lovely couple, Derek and Jules Shenton (the company is called Shenton Safari) and I can really recommend them.

I would normally agree that staying outside the park is not ideal and it's something I usually avoid. Flatdogs is full of wildlife day and night - elephants, giraffes, hippos, etc., even a leopard kill a couple of weeks ago. They are as close as it's possible to be without being inside (basically you just have to cross the river to be inside the park). If you are travelling on a budget you can choose to stay on a "room only" basis, paying park fees only when you enter the park, paying for meals as you go, doing your own laundry, etc.

If you can afford a couple of hours of luxury I highly recommend the Bush Spa at Mfuwe Lodge. It's the only time I have been asked to sit up during a massage to watch an elephant walk past the treatment area!
