I'll be flying to Lusaka the next dry season to make an overland trip through Zambia-Botswana & South Africa.
Before heading south however, I would like to catch a bus to Mfuwe & South Luangwa NP. As far as I know, buses run from Lusaka to Chipata and then another leg to Mfuwe. I wonder if you know an alternative route to backtrack to Lusaka (either from Mfuwe or Chipata) or any other stopover which put me on the way to Livingstone without doing the same route twice.

I don't think you can get directly from Mfuwe anywhere other than Chipata. However as lots of people drive through Zambia you might be able to catch a lift!
Might try flying one leg with proflight namibia.... sometimes tickets "inexpensive" and will save you about 8 hours of your life on a bus doubling back on the same route youve already taken.
You´ll probably have to stay in chipata for a day when you come from lusaka. We arrived from malawi at around 10 am in chipata and we had to wait for four hours untill the minibus was full, after which it took four hours to get to mfuwe, which was quite a rough ride. One tip: travel light, you don´t want to travel with a big 20 kg backpack in those mini buses. Stay at dean´s place in chipata, which was allright. We camped at Flatdogs camp, very nice on the platforms in the trees. It was only us$7,50 per person per night with your own tent, instead of the us$35 for one of their tents (those tents had their own bathroom, though). You can´t really buy any food in Mfuwe, because you aren´t really allowed out of the camp, so it might be wise to take some food with you as eating at the camp will cost you a few bucks. Great NP :) I don´t know of any alternative routes though, sorry.
