Hi, my girlfriend and I just returned from our 17 day trip in Uganda and I would like to provide you with a detailed review of our trip and some of the preparation we completed in advance of the trip. I hope you find the information and experience useful as you prepare for your trip. Before I begin, I'd like to thank all of you that answered my questions on this message board with special thanks to BigBri and SipiMan.

My girlfriend and I are both in our early 40s. I wanted to go on a…

Hello,

I am planning a trip to Uganda and Eastern Kenya (including Kampala and Kisumu) and had concerns about safety.
Are there any special precautions or warnings that residents or fellow travellers to these areas can offer?

Much obliged,
-Jim

I'm booking a flight into and out of Entebbe - but they all arrive at night and leave early morning (2am). Having never traveled to Uganda, how safe will it be arriving and leaving after dark?

If you're travelling to Kidepo by public transport 1) call the Warden at Kidepo Park direct on 0775173850 first and 2) if you're in Kitgum, go to the Karenga transport park opposite Stanbic Bank in the centre of town behind the main bus park.

The Warden is very helpful and is the only guy who actually knows if there is accommodation available in the park and if any vehicles are free to pick you up from Karenga, or wherever.

It might be worth popping into the UWA office in Kitgum to see if a…

Hi everyone,

Just back from a two-week stay in Uganda and Kenya. In Kampala, I tried both Backpackers and Red Chili Hideaway (hostels) and Red Chili is infinitely better than Backpackers.

Backpackers is pretty run down, their kitchen serves hardly any food and the accommodation is on the basic side of basic (they don't even have a generator, which is unusual for a place that caters to foreign travellers). The saving grace is that their internet connection is, by Ugandan standards, pretty good.

Hello everybody,

I have two options going from Nairobi to Kigali:

A direct connection at Entebbe, 2:30 hours, i.e. not seeing anything other than the airport. Or arriving at 0930 and flying onward at 2130. This would obviously enable me to go out and have a look at Kampala and Lake Victoria. On the other hand, this would shorten my time in Kigali, from where the onward flight departs at 1450 the following day.

So the question basically is half a day each at Kampala and Kigali or just a full…

Does anyone know how a telegraphic transfer works (for paying gorilla permits) and which currency is the best to transfer the money from Europe to Uganda (US dollars or Euro)? And what about transfering costs?

Playing with the idea of taking the cargo ship from Mwanza to Kampala.

Someone did it? Any idea about the schedule?
