Hi,
About a month ago I began volunteering for a great organization in Fort Portal that builds and delivers bicycles to orphans who are good students but live between 10 and 15km away from their schools. Also, they build and customize tricycles and wheelchairs for disabled people (both adults and children) living in the community. The organization was started in June by a guy who is Ugandan and was originally an orphan, but benefited from an organization that helped orphans and recently graduated from Berkeley in California with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Although it is still young, I think this is a great program and I also think it would benefit from a few more volunteers. I contacted the Backpackers in Kampala to look for some, but was told I needed to bring in posters advertising the volunteer positions myself, which makes sense, but I am not headed to Kampala for a couple more weeks. So, as a traveler myself, I immediately thought of the Thorn Tree forum!
What we are looking for are responsible travelers looking to volunteer for a minimum of 2 weeks at a small, but growing non-profit in beautiful Fort Portal, Uganda.
For $70 a week, we include:
* A dormitory bed at the organization which is about a 15min walk to the center of town and is in a safe area with a night guard
* A simple Western style breakfast: cereal, bananas, milk (powdered), tea, muffins
* Ugandan style lunch
* Free black tea and instant coffee (when there is electricity)
We would love to hear from anyone interested and are more than happy to answer any questions!!!
Also, if there is anyone in Fort Portal now who is heading to a Kampala backpackers and would be willing to drop off a flyer or two, please contact us!
Thanks!
Leslie Taylor
