Hi

I am looking to spend 3 months in central and eastern Africa over the new year and wanted to incorporate a proactive project along the way, for example spend one month volunteering on a community/teaching project or on a wildlife reserve / conservation project or something. I wondered if anybody has done anything similar in Uganda or has any recommendations of good local projects / organisations that you could advise me about & how I could get in touch with them?

Many thanks!

I have just returned from volunteering for 3 months in Uganda and so have lots of info about orphanages and street children projects if that's of interest to you. I will PM you over the next few days. You will have an amazing experience, I'd love to go back.

There are opportunities to Volunteer at Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale. Charlotte the Director of the initiatives has accomodation at the Lake, and offers volunteers highly discounted rates. projects include teaching at local school and making crafts with local women. you may email her at info@bunyonyi.com

Another possibility is Softpower, an community education and healthcare program near Jinja. My friend and I visited a few of their schools a couple years ago and were very impressed.

Pls read my blog Diary of a mzungu if you're interested in one volunteer's view of Uganda.
I'm a VSO volunteer with the Uganda Conservation Foundation We don't have other vol positions I'm afraid although I know the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Trust CSCWT does have paid opportunities sometimes.
See link on my blog for Go! Overseas, another possible source of ideas.
Good luck
