Hello ThornTree!

My name is Elizabeth Bailie and I am the UK Director of Mwenya Uganda, a healthcare NGO working to improve health and livelihoods across the Mpigi district of Uganda (about 45km west of Kampala).

We believe wholeheartedly in empowering the local communities with the ability to raise funds for Mwenya's vital health care work themselves. Instead of relying on donations from the West to fund its projects, Mwenya's Ugandan volunteers are developing innovative ways to raise money on the ground. This year Mwenya's Ugandan volunteers worked hand in hand with a group of knowledgeable students from the University of Exeter in the UK.

Students came to Uganda to help design a day trip for tourists to come and experience Uganda, the real way - away from the well-trodden tourist paths and tourists who gawk at gorillas (or people for that matter!) This experience is about interaction, learning and discovery of all that Uganda has to offer!

Designed by curious backpackers for curious backpackers, our one day tour package is like none other - it enables you to discover the real Uganda, while making a significant difference to a local NGO, and be back in Kampala in time for dinner!

The package includes:
Pick up from your hotel/hostel in Kampala (optional)
Guided trip on local transport to Mpigi town (mini bus taxis - approximately 1 hour) (
optional)
Arrival at Hajati's house, greeted with fresh fruit from her garden
Help Hajati and Sarah cook you a lovely lunch of stews in banana leave packages and other traditional dishes
Enjoy your delicious lunch while chatting to Mwenya volunteers
After lunch enjoy a guided trip to Mpambile, the main drum manufacturing town in Uganda
Come back to Mpigi town for a drumming lesson with a local teacher at Mwenya's office
Enjoy a performance from a local traditional dance group
Escorted trip back to your hotel/hostel on public transport (*optional)

All guides are paid a fair wage and the profits go towards funding vital healthcare projects for those who need them most. If you are interested in a home stay or a two day experience, please don't hesitate to ask - we'll do our best to accommodate your wishes.
