If you are a GB national its easier to go to Rwanda for the day and come back in as its an easy free visa, you just have to pay $50 for a new UG one on return. You can extend in Kampala ok though but it might take a little time.

You can easily obtain an extension at the immigration headquarters on Jinja Road – adjunct to Kampala Road, which is the main road in the city.

Youll be expected to provide your application with reasons for which you need an extension. Ugandan immigration officers are quite friendly compared to their Tanzanian and Kenyan neighbours and are unlikely to give you a hard time. If its for volunteering, then I believe you know who to involve in the process. You can even get it extended twice, provided you do run out of "acceptable" reasons.

Of course ric_howard`s idea is a good option.

Ric_howard,
Do you know if the road around Mbarara has been improved, or is it still rough and dusty as I saw it a year ago!

I renewed my Ugandan tourist visa in Fort Portal immigration office. Totally hassle-free and quick operation. I don't remember needing anything else than my passport and a verbal reason why to stay longer than two months that I had originally got at the border. The officer, however, wasn't present the day I went to Fort Portal but I was given his phone number so that I could contact him and we were able to arrange things.

My experience trying to do this extension first in Kampala's immigration office was not nice: a bored fat woman told me to produce a "motivation letter" and bring it back after a few hours that same day. When I asked for the processing time ahead the fat woman (ok, she was pregnant) told me it would be a matter of at least a week to actually get the new visa. Then I politely said goodbye and went to Fort Portal.

Maybe some officials in Kampala are better and more helpful (this woman didn't even look at me when she spoke to me) but even some ladies involved in tourism in Kampala told me that they (Kampala officials) are notorious of giving long processing and waiting times - one week, two weeks - after which they can just tell you that the visa isn't ready or not accepted or so on...

Good luck in Kampala or elsewhere. I've heard it could be easy to renew in Jinja, too.

my internet cut out - not sure if the last post went through

In Brief my visa is up Jan 19 2013 and I need to extend it and Im trying do so without having to go back to Kampala (I up in the Northeast region). Does anyone know if it is possible to extend in Jinja or Gulu? (either one would be convenient at some point)
