Hi folks,

In July we (me and my girlffriend) are on a four week trip through Uganda and Rwanda. Our tour will start on 9th July in Kampala. For the first couple of days we haven't have fix plans yet, but we are thinking about going to Murchinson Falls and Rhino Sanctuary.

Is anyone at Kampala at that time and wants to share a car? Or is it possible to go by public transport?

At the 13th we have to be in Kilembe because on the next day we start a tour in Rwenzori Mountains. Is it possible to go from Masindi to Kilembe via public transport? Or from Kampala to Kilembe? On the way we would like to spend a day at the crater lakes. Which spot is especially nice?

Looking forward to hear from you! Sebastian

To visit the rhino sanctuary (def. recommended!) you can get a bus from Kampala towards Masindi and ask the conductor to drop you at Nakitoma (2hrs). The turning to the sanctuary is clearly marked, they are about 7km from the main road. We walked part of the way then got a lift with some other tourists, or you can take a boda (motorbike taxi). It's a lovely place, well worth staying a night if you have time. You can track the rhino late in the day when the light is best for photos and the rooms and food are both very good, although beer is expensive :-(

For a visit to Murchison you would need to arrange a private hire in Masindi. Our hotel recommended a driver ffor us, or the UWA office can help. (Both were about the same price.)

An alternative would be to book a tour with Red Chilli, a backpackers place in Kampala. They do trips to Murchison and can include a short stop at the rhino place on the way.
