Hello

I would like to hear your opinion about the most interesting place somebody could visit in Uganda. I would like to hear everyone, it doesn't mater if this place is special for his cultural side or natural, i would like to hear everything and possibly something that is not written in the popular guidebooks :)

If you had enough money, time and you were physically very fit, which sights would you visit in Uganda?

Thank you very much for you answer, M

Hi

The mountain gorillas trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was the best thing I did in Uganda (or all of Africa for than matter).
Rafting the source of the Nile near Jinja was good fun as well. Some of those rapids suck you right down under the water (eg. The Bad Place).
Lake Victoria was nice and peaceful with flamingoes and hippos.
But then again these places are all in your guidebook I suppose........
I didn't think too much of the cities like Kampala and Entebbe.

Good luck with your trip.

First off, going to the 14,000 ft. level when directly on the equator. That would be the Rwenzori Mtns, Doing the week long trek, and possibly climb of Margharita, is amazing. Next would be Mgahinga Gorilla Nat'l Pk, hiking there, and if gorillas were around, trekking them, but of course trekking mtn. gorillas at Bwindi also. Finally, my other favorite of Uganda is Kibale Forest, watching the monkeys fly through the trees, and trekking the chimps there.

Of course the gorillas are awesome, and the Ruwenzori mountains truly unique. I also liked the chimpanzee hike in Kibale Forest, the crater lakes area near Fort Portal, and the boat trip on the Kazinga Channel (lots of hippos) in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

My own Ugandan special experience would be trekking through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to Nkuringo which left an indelible memory on me. I have travelled extensively in Africa for over 20 years and this really was my all time great experience.

After a fantastic hike through the forest to Nkuringo at a height of 2100m I was treated to a most magnificent 270 degree spectacle. With 6 volcanoes in the Virunga range to the south, some 160 kms to the north the snows and glacier on the Rwenzori were clearly visible and to the west the escarpment of the western breach of the rift valley in the Dr Congo could all clearly be identified. I had travelled in April during the rain season when visiblity is much sharper than during the dry season months.

Stay awhile down in the South-West (on your way to the gorillas etc) and help the village people who live around Uganda Lodge - help in the Nursery School, teach them some basic health lessons using some already translated DVD's, go and learn what crops they grow for food and medicines, climb the nearby hills with a local guide, visit the farms and help with early morning milking, watch and learn from the village women making mats and baskets from papyrus & grasses they collect locally, teach them some basic western cookery for future visitors, help adults & children alike with their English - simply by speaking with them, raise a little money from your friends before you go...so you can have something to spend in the hardware shop, or local market - and actually see that money benefit a family (re-roof their house, build a latrine, make a kitchen compound, buy special clay for pottery-making, cement a floor, put windows in a school)...well I could go on and on....and I know the smiles and thanks from these delightful villagers are the memories that will stay with you forever - far longer than a beautiful beach etc. (I know as I've done both!)

If I had enough money, time and I was physically very fit I would travel to Arua buy a bike from the excellent bike market there and then spend the next few weeks travelling in the north. I would set off from Arua and go via Yumbe, Moyo, Adjumani, Kitgum, Kotido, Moroto to Nakapiripirit which everyone knows is centre of the universe.

The north is defo the most interesting place in UG and sadly it doesn't feature much in any guide book.

Thanks all. The #6 looks like fun. I will search for some mountain biking in Uganda.
Thanks again!
