Hi, all of you Uganda specialists out there.
It looks like my wife and I will be based in Kampala for the next couple of years, moving there in a few short months. After close to 5 years living, working and travelling in and through Latin America we are very excited about that change (bombs notwithstanding).
I have a few questions I hope someone in the know may be able to answer:
-
Internet: For my freelance work I would need a decent internet connection. Reports on the availibility and speed of internet in Kampala are wildly different, and probably outdated as soon as they're published. Does anyone know how easy/difficult it is to get a good speed, and how much would I have to shell out per month?
-
House: There is a similar post already on TT, but I'd be grateful if someone could add some extra info. What reasonably nice living areas are there, not a million miles from the Kira/Old Kira road? The other post mentioned Wandegeya, Bukoto and Ntinda. We would like a reasonably safe area with possibly none of that gated-in bollocks, if such a thing is possible. I have never been to East Africa so I'm not too sure about the housing situation.
How hard is it to find a place (with some sort of garden) in those areas, perhaps particulary Bukoto, and how much rent approx. would we be looking at per month? -
Car: Form what I've seen, prices for second-hand 4x4 wheels seem to be rather stiff. What sort of money would I be looking at if I wanted to buy a Land Cruiser, Land Rover or- if those are too expensive - a similar, cheaper 4x4 for which spares are easily found? Can be old and battered, as long as its bowels are working alright. Is the buying process fairly straightforward or a massive pain? Are there any trustworthy dealers or are cars best bought privately?
Cheers.
