We're planning a self drive (no driver) in Uganda next year (we are experienced travellers, also in Africa). I've found a couple of companies: city cars (drive uganda), alpha car rentals, abacusvacations, sarari eye. Does anyone have a good (or bad) experience with one of these car rental companies?

I've used City Cars several times and never had a problem. Self-drive is really easy in Uganda and I'm surprised many more people don't do it. There aren't many main roads and it is very easy to navigate. Let me know if you need any advice on where to go and what to see.

Thanks Sipiman! Nice to hear that you felt comfortable driving yourself in Uganda. I've got a message from city cars that they no longer operate up country safaris or self drive hires. So i have to try an other company.

That's a pity. I don't know about any other companies. Did they not recommend anyone?

I did asked them if they could give references, so maybe they will. I now have two interesting offers from safari eye (USS 85) en alpha rentals (USS70) for a 4x4. They also can arrange our gorilla permits. But I can't find experiences of other travellers with these companies. Alpha rentals is mentioned though in the Lonely Planet and other travel guides, so maybe we just have to go for it.
