Greetings! I'll be in Uganda next month for two week work work-related trip. I'll primarily be in Masaka, but will also have a couple of days in Kampala as well. I'm also a record collector/DJ with a big love for African sounds. Hence, I was wondering if anyone knew of any places (record stores, markets, etc.) in either Masaka or Kampala where I would be able to purchase vinyl records. Any guidance or assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks and be well.....

Hi,

When you come you may try contacting Radio Uganda/radio CBS they can Help you with Some Vinyls.

Thank you for your advice. I will definitely follow-up with them. Anyone else know of places in Masaka or Kampala to buy vinyl records? Peace!

Uganda is rather superficial in music: cheaply made, predictable, local disco-RnB-ragga trash, really (I would say 99.99% of all songs are 2-beaters, with a triple on the first). You wont find vinyl in Uganda I am afraid. The local stars have their CDs printed, but thats it. Most people get their music through MP3s in kiosks, or through MP3 CDs they buy at these street vendor kiosks. All radio stations also play that crap from morning till evening, with foreign RnB intermixed, and, its all MP3s.

Ugand has many virtues, but music is clearly not one of them. For the "African sounds", go to the other side of the continent.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I sort of figured that finding vinyl might prove to be difficult in Uganda, but I've had good luck finding vinyl where in the world that I have traveled so far. This time around I'm gonna bring a 7 inch record with me and use it as a visual guide to see if that might help me track down some vinyl in Kampala at the very least. My hope is that I can find some older Ugandan music and other older regional African music on vinyl. Thanks once again for input....

Then go hang out at the National Theater - probably your only chance.
