Hi

I will be in Uganda in January and February of 2014 and after a planned trek I will have two to three weeks to explore Kampala and Uganda. I am wondering if anyone on this site can help me with a couple of questions.

I am not going to be bringing my phone from home so wonder if it is relatively easy and cheap to buy a used local mobile/cell phone and buy time as I need it. If it is can anyone suggest where I could do this when I get there?

And I am interested in doing a tour or two of Kampala before I start wandering around it by myself and I like to walk. Wikitravel has a mention of a company "A City on Foot Tours" which sounded promising but the link seems to go only to a twitter account not an email or local phone number. Any experience with this tour guide or company and anyone have contact info?

Lastly any feedback on the Backpackers Hostel vs Red Chili Hostel??

Any information will be appreciated!

Thanks

John (from Canada)

I would say it will be easier and cheaper to hook up to local network and make call than back home. As for finding somewhere do not worry there are people everywhere selling Sim cards and time.

Hello.
Uganda is the country of mobile phones...you will find many many small shops.
To get a sim card you will have to register ( take a picture and passport to do it ).
I am swiss and lived one year in Kampala ( 2011-2012), will turn back for two weeks in October.
I know a good guide for Kampala. He is young and sportiv, can do visit by foot with you
then public transport if needed.
He is used to help expatriates on their arrival and could assist you to buy a phone ( check if price ok)
and register the sim card.
He works as a guide/driver for trips upcountry too. He drove me and my family many times.
He is someone really trustful. He speaks a good English.
His name is Paul,
I will give you his contact with pleasure. Don't hesitate if you have any other questions.
I know well the country. (removed)
I was living 5 minutes from Backpackers ( Paul is close too ), went often there to play billiard with my children and eat a pizza.
It's a nice green place, near Mengo where there are some bars, market. Easy to reach city center with a matatu.
They organize group trips to different national parks as well as Red chili.
This one I don't really know because at the other side of town.
Look forward...Uganda is so beautiful and ugandans really friendly!

Hi,
About mobile phones its no problem, you can get a phone from $30-$40, you will need to register with a local network, so you need a photo copy of your passport and 2 passport sized photos, registration is totally free, so you will have to buy local airtime which ranges between $0.4-$8.
About foot tours, i can recommend richard@tamanitours.com, he will get you what you need. About accommodation, in my opinion redchilli offers a more excellent budget accommodation.

Thanks to all for the information provided. I don't actually have a cell phone now (helps save money for a trip) so I will probably buy a used phone in Kampala to use while I am there.

And there was me thinking I was the last person without a mobile!

To be honest I do have a cell phone but it is a cheap one I bought from a local convenience store. I live in a small town in a mountainous area of Canada so when I leave town I put a few dollars credit on the phone so that if I have car trouble or other problems I can call for help.

I try to spend less money elsewhere and save for travel.

And I didn't take it as criticism. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear in my answer.
