Two strong recommendations:

  1. Lake Bunyonyi is beautiful. It's the kind of place that in most places in Europe would be destroyed by high-rise hotels and materialistic tourism. Go before it gets destroyed. (See Lonely Planet recommendations of places to stay.) It is genuinely unspoiled now. But, and this leads to the second recommendation, it has a combination of great beauty and great poverty in the surrounding villages that is more extreme than any other place I have seen.

  2. Second recommendation. Go beyond relaxing and enjoying the beauty and learn about the area, the villages, and the life of the people. For this I recommend JIMMY BROWN (0)753670903. (Email: jimmybiryo@yahoo.com) I met him only yesterday, and today he took me for a walk, canoe trip, and visits to the local school and many homes. (We had lunch at his house.) He is director of an important project, Kakooko Project for Needy Children and Orphans. He is also earning a degree in environmental science and is very knowledgeable about the area. He did not ask me for any money and only gave me the chance to donate to the school, which was an honor. You will want to help when you see the lives of people in this area, who seem not to be benefitting from the cottages and other tourism. But you can help contribute as well as enjoy the tremendous beauty of this area. I strongly recommend this to you. Please let me know about your experiences.
