Hi

(I become addicted to this forum the answers are so useful thank you all so much)

Could some one tell me where is the best place to stay in the city in order to get the most out of my one day in the capital.
Budget of about £120-£150 for a family of 4.
Any reccomendations for great things to do eat? Markets? art? non touristy things that show the true Kampala?

Thanks

Hi there, the ideal place would be New City Annex. Its well located with lots places to visit especially galaries, shops, crfts centers, theaters. Its relatively cheap with an individual paying about $31 (thirty one dollars). Its a favorite spot for lots of foreign travelers. We've had lots of our clients there. We wrote a small preview of it on our website. [http://www.adventure-travellers.com/content.php?id=page&d=23&cols=3]

You can take an excursion to Namugongo Uganda Marty's shrine, Uganda Museum. they have great history and are located on the same way. They are interesting places and you spend little money to get there.

You specifically mention Art. Last weekend I attended the launch of a new art / lounge / cafe / gallery venture, called Mish Mash. It's on Acacia Avenue in Kololo (i.e.very central indeed and easy for taxi drivers etc to find). I think it's Plot 28, but for local direction, just look for their sign a couple of doors up Acacia Avenue from the Protea Hotel.

They have permanent collections of great art by Uganda artists displayed (and for sale) and a great gift shop with clothing, bags, crafts, etc. They also did a mean Chicken and Pesto Baguette...

Enjoy.
