I heard that nowadays it's quite hard to spot the tree climbing lions and that they went to Congo. Is this just a rumor or a fact?
Only doubts I heard expressed at QE were those as to the whereabouts of the chimps at Kyambura.
Regular sightings on Lake George side of the park NE of Katunguru - we caught three females after a kill.
Told Ishasha sightings depend on the weather - they'll only be in the trees if it's sunny and warm - not by any means guaranteed in that neck of the woods, but no-one questioned as to whether lions were there or not.
Locals explain that in the time of Obote and Amin, many animals crossed into the Congo, but the trend these days is the opposite.
Its just a rumor, two groups of visitors have excitedly watched them under our guidance, though the factor of weather really counts, chances are more high in sunny weather.
Enjoy the tour!
I guess it comes and goes... I have no recent information as my trip was a little more than a year ago. But I wasn't successful at seeing any. Tried at different moments of the day, over a 2-day period, with a ranger from the park. But there had been sightings the week before. One of the friends I was with had already tried a few months before, to no avail (he did see lions, however, but not in the trees. We saw none).
This part of the park is nice though, if a little difficult to reach. You wouldn't waste your time going there even if you didn't see any lions. I'd recommend camping near the river. You'll be lulled to sleep (!) by the grunts of the hippos and other unknown beasts... :)
