Hi, I am a young Australian female travelling solo and planning to visit the gorillas in Uganda in December. I want to try adn keep the price as low as possible. It is proving very expensive to do this in a tour as I'm travelling solo adn have to pay the single supplement.

I am therefore wondering if it's possible and SAFE to catch a bus to and from Buhoma on the local buses from Kampala and organise my accommodation myself...etc. Has anyone done this and/or know if it would be safe? Very Important!!

Thanks

What kind of tours are you looking at? There are plenty of tours around with no single supplement (you just share with another traveller) eg Explore, Exodus, Acacia, Intrepid, Geckos, Dragoman, although those will be longer trips including the gorillas. Or do you just want a 3/4 day trip from Kampala?

It may not be the single supplement that is making the tours expensive- the gorilla permit alone is $500, which you will still have to pay.

It is very possible to arrange a trip on your own.

Taking buses and minibuses is reasonably safe--traffic accidents are more of a concern than anything else.

You can arrange for a permit directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority in Kampala. This is best done well in advance. Additional information is available on their website.

Peace,

BB

I did a gorilla track on my own as part of my 4 weeks solo (single white female:) travel around Uganda without a problem. Uganda is safe (considering you take the usual precautions) and must be one of the most beautiful places on Earth!
