In late December/early January, I am planning to travel from Kampala to Fort Portal (for Kibale chimp trekking) and from there to Kisoro (to see the gorillas) and then on to Kigali. I'm travelling alone, without a car.

I'm not sure about getting from Fort Portal to Kisoro. What would be the best way to do this on public transport? Could it be reliably done in a day?

I realised that Kigali to Kisoro is a lot shorter than Fort Portal to Kisoro. So I'm considering doing it the other way around (fly into Kigali, then to Kisoro to Fort Portal to Kampala and fly out from there).

Would it be easier to get from Kisoro to Fort Portal (rather than the other way around)?
Can I get from Kigali to Kisoro in one day reliably (have to be in Kisoro in time for the gorilla trek)?

transport in this region is quite easy and kinda reliable.

it doesnt matter in which direction u are travelling. getting from kigali to kisoro is not far, but u wont be there on time in the morning if u wanna trek the gorillas the same day. but one day ahead is enough.

there are lotta minibusses from fort portal to mbarara. from there u can catch a coach or minibus to kisoro. u can easily do this in one day.

from kisoro to kigali, the best way is to take a moto-taxi to the border and take onward transport from there. kisoro-to-kigali should take about 3 to 4 hours.

There is or was an overnight bus between Fort Portal and kabale (not my choice of transport) and then you will need to transfer on to Kisoro

Best bet is to see if you can book the Post Bus from Fort P to Mbarara AND the Post bus to Kisoro (or kabale if it is full) - I do not know if it is possible to either book this or even if they connect so check.

There are plenty of buses and of course minivans but all will involve at least one change

As you're going round, best to opt for cheapest flight - most probably Entebbe.

Really recommend travelling by day. When in Fort Portal check bus times to Mbarara, leave early morning - 6am ish and change buses in Mbarara, and bear in mind you may well have to change again in Kabale, from where you can also minibus it.

Make sure you have the gate for gorilla trekking well identified, as you could be just as well off heading there from Kabale. Also suggest you spend the nights before and after trekking as near as possible to gate, as many tracks are rough and from either Kisoro or Kabale could represent a few hours travelling on tracks with precipices at night, so perhaps factor in an extra night in the area.

Kabale is better served by public transport than Kisoro, if heading to Kigali - direct buses.

From Kisoro - minibus, taxi (or boda-boda if not travelling with much baggage) to the border - from the border, walk 300m, pick up a minibus to Musanze (400RSh - although may charge you more), then 25 seater to Kigali at about 1100Rsh) - all in all about 4 hours including border crossings.

Transport in between all the points is available, commonly in form of Mini Buses or Commuter Taxis, but the time management they present to you may not favour your supposedly strictly scheduled Gorrila trekking, may be wise to travel a day in advance to kisoro for the Gorillas.

Enjoy

the bus park in Kabale for Kisoro is at the other end of town from the main bus park. Repeat try and get conecting Post Bus if possible
