yes we wil be a month in an independent travel around uganda ... how shall we carry the money?

There are cash machines with the Visa logo. Mastercard logo is almost worthless in all the African countries we visited. Money changers abound at border crossings. As of last August, the dollar is still king in Africa. Euros & Pounds were exchanged but had a higher premium. Cash bills need to be new (post 2001 last August) and undamaged or they are unacceptable. Credit cards for payment are sometimes accepted, but with a percentage (up to 10% we found) at times for "service charges".

Uganda now has new ATM machines at the Stanbic Banks in most cities from which local currency can be withdrwan. They accept ALL international cards - inculding Mastercard, Access etc The barclays are upgrading to do tha same.
You can go inside any Stanbic bank, and they will exchange UgShillings for dollars if you need them for onward travel (Rwanda etc?) Could take awhile - they have to enter their'vaults' and said sorry but its an unusual transaction!
Don't leave it until you have completely run out of cash, there may be periods when there is a long queue, as its not functioning - but the manager who lives on the premises can be fetched (by the security guard) and they will start work on it imediately.
Another tip - if you find its not working - then go inside if open & ask to see manager (a white face works wonders!) Twice I did this and waited inside til it worked again - then I was escorted to front of queue, AND thanked by locals after for hurrying up the repair! I just stayed 6 weeks in SWest and fond the branch in Ntungamo - just a small town - brilliant
They told me the main town branches will also dispence other currencies such as dollars but have not checked this out.
Anyone else tried yet?
