I am currently in Kampala Uganda and having tried to use my Mastercard in Stanbic the ATM firstly refused my pin number then after finally accepting it stated that my bank was unavailable. I would suggest that you use Visa as it is the best alternative and as Mastercard are being phased out I'd think it best to have a Visa card. I am referring to a Mastercard Credit Card as I don't know anyone who has a Mastercard Debit Card, my normal Debit Card is not allowed to be used in African Countries according to my bank, which helps me nothing at all. I knew not to bring travellers cheques as they are very difficult to change so I'mm afraid your best bet is hard cash either Dollars/ Pounds or Euro's for the best rates of exchange.

It's been a while now but I was in Uganda and Rwanda Dec 11/Jan 12 with only a mastercard for cash. In Rwanda I had to present my passport and credit card (travelex cards don't work as they don't have your name) to the Bank of Kigali. In Uganda I had no trouble at all with either my (Australian) credit card or my travelex card at any Stanbic ATM.
