In October I spent a week on the very relaxing Banda Island in Lake Victoria. The guy running the island, Alex, told me the story of how the island came to be a backpackers place, the story of the original owner Dom and of his unfortunate death earlier this year.
Apparently, everyone thought Banda had closed to guests after Dom died so there are now very few people coming, which is a great shame as it's a great place - nice dorms, beach rooms and camping plus great food. But, mainly, it's a place to relax. I did more reading there than I've done for years, interupted only for meals and trips to the bar.
Very much a backpackers island so not the place to go if you're looking for silver service etc but the food was excellent. Plenty of walks around the island, hammocks on the beach etc. Did I mention it's a good place to relax?!
Anyway, this place deserves to do well and is definitely worth considering for a few days away from the madness of Kampala.
