Zam to Dar: Tazara train or bus?

Country forums / Africa / Zambia

Hey there,

In late June my sister and I will be traveling from Zambia to Tanz and I am currently trying to decide between taking the bus or the Tazara train. Reviews online and in guidebooks have me totally conflicted... Took the train from Nairobi to Mombasa a few years ago and despite the fact that what should have been a 12 hour trip took 26, it was an amazing experience. Would be hugely appreciative of thoughts and opinions on the Tazara train - especially from anyone who has taken the trip from Kapira to Dar relatively recently. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts...

Peace and thanks,
ash.

Have a look at the Man in Seat 61 - he is a mine of useful info on trains.

I went by bus from Dar to Lusaka a few months ago and definitelly cannot recommend this option. It took around 55 hrs with changing buses at the border. No matter what salesmen say, no buses cross the border.
If you choose to travel on a train at least you can buy food and strech your legs whenever you want.

The train will take about two days but it will be fine, the busses are notoriously sketchy. Get a sleeper cabin and dont worry too much about being on time, it will be delayed. I took this train from Mbeya to Dar in October and it was delayed for 18 hours which didnt seem to be too much of a hassle for the locals
