workable itin?

Country forums / Africa / Ethiopia

We are leaving for Ethiopia this weekend, while there I wanted to spend a few days to go to Somalialand. Well the direct Addis to Hargeisa flights are sold out already so wondered if this is workable.
day1 fly addis-dire dawa, go to harar, overnight
day2 harar to hargeisa overland via jijiga (loong day), is it possible to make the connection in jijiga, or do buses to the border only leave in the morning
day3 hargeisa
day4 PM fly back to addis

Some years ago I went from Harar to Hargeysa in one day. I took a bus from Harar to Jijiga at about 6 am, had immediate connection in Jijiga for a minibus to the border at Tokochale, where I arrived at about noon. Then I took a shared taxi to Hargeysa, where I arrived around 4 pm.

Anyhow, your schedule is tight and there are no flights back to Addis every day.

I have verified that there are flights to Addis on Day 4.
Or we can just do the Addis fly -> Jijiga overland -> Hargeisa bit on day 1 and have more time. I'm interested in visiting the Laas Geel cave paintings near Hargeisa.

I took a bus from Harar at 7am and as soon as we arrived in Jijiga, one minibus was just about to leave to Wajaale. From the border we were on a shared taxi and finally arrived in Hargeisa around 4pm. It was a long day and we were pretty much covered in dust when we arrived at the Oriental Hotel.

Thanks.. we got the visa OK in Addis, but then weren't able to change our return flight back to the US to give us time to visit Hargeisa.. so we had to give it a miss.
