With train from Tanzania to Zambia

Country forums / Africa / Zambia

Hey

I am travelling from Dar es Salaam to Livingstone with Train.

DO anybody know if it is possible to buy the visa for Zambia on the train - or do you have to have it in advance? We are from Denmark, Holland and the Phillippines.

And do you know how much it is (they couldn't say at the Consulate of Zambia in Dar ?!?!?!?!) Can you pay in dollars or does it have to be Zambian currency?

Have to make a stopover in Lusaka to get the visa to Namibia - any fun things to do around Lusaka when travelling budget? - any good places to stay - safe, clean, cheap ;)

And how long does it take to get a visa for namibia ready if you are phillipino ????

thanks for the help

Cheers
Christentze

Christentze,

The train will stop for approximately an hour at the Zambia-Tanzania border and you will be asked to buy a visa if you do not have one already. It costs $50 USD. You will love the train.

Brad,
Did you do this trip recently? I have read so many conflicting stories about the train and visas. I know I used to buy my Tanzania visa on the train when I lived in Zambia, but I never had to do it the other way around. I would love to not have to worry about the Embassy in Dar! Did you get your train tickets in advance or day of? Thanks!

Chistenze,

Stay at Lusaka Backpackers (formerly Chachacha Backpackers). Manda Hill is a shopping mall great for stocking up on things like shampoo, etc. The Dutch Reform Market or Northmead are great for crafts. Enjoy. Lusaka is a great city.

Go on www.seat69.com great for info on the tazara, upto date too.
stay at Ku-Omboka not Chachacha/Lusaka Backpackers, nicer and less crowded.

Hi christentze, not sure if you have already traveled, however you may want to get your visa from the Tanzania Zambian High Commission Box 2525, Plots 5 and 8, Ohio St, Sokoine Dr Junction, Dar es Salaam; tel: 051 118481/2; fax: 051 12977

If that does not work out remember to carry the exact visa fee when you get to the boarder, they do not give change.

Good luck.

Hi Christenze

Did you end up making the trip? I If so, I hope it all went well! I am also wondering about the visa at the border on the train from DAR. We are a Canadian and an Italian.

Thanks
