Tsingy de Bemaraha November 2012 access

Country forums / Africa / Madagascar

Hey

I'm going to be arriving in Madagascar next Friday, November 16th and was interested in going to Tsingy de Bemaraha. I know that access to the park closes sometime around then but it is dependent upon the road conditions and how rainy it has been. I was wondering if anybody has been there recently/ knows the current status of the park and recent weather conditions. I saw the park in a National Geographic article a couple years back and have been dying to go there every since!

Many thanks!

Hi there,
Tsingy of Bemaraha will be closed at the end of November, we did this tour last year around November 19th and no rain there so I don't know this years if the weather will change.
Good luck!

Hi Alex,

Your problem is that it’s a long way to travel to Morondava or Belo sur Tsiribihina only to be told that the trail from Belo to Bekopaka is no longer passable. Unless you have other things you want to do that will take you to the area, you’d be best advised to simply phone one or more of the hotels in Morondava listed in either the LP or Bradt guides. As they almost all organise trips to the Tsingy for their guests, they’ll be able to tell you whether they’re still running these trips and how long they expect to go on doing so. Obviously, you wouldn’t need to commit to booking one of their tours.

Other things that might take you to the area: Morondava itself has good beaches, there’s the Avenue des Baobabs, Kirindy Forest Reserve, by pirogue to Belo sur Mer for Kirindy Mitea National Park and of course the trip down the Tsiribihina.

By the way, when I was last there, the guides told me that if anyone ever managed to get to Bekopaka during the wet season, they’d take them into the Park. Just that no one’s ever done it yet.

Hope the weather is kind to you!

Just got back from there. The road is mostly good with some very bad sections. We were 6 in a 4x4 so we're riding low. If it's just 1or 2 then you will have more clearance. Our driver was getting worried and wanted to leave before the rains came. People were still driving in as we were coming out. Not rainy at all yet. If you email any of the guides they can update you. They have gone into December in the past but when it does rain its over.

Hi Alex,

have you managed to get to Tsingy? I'm arriving this friday and am heading straight in that direction to see if i can make it before the rains. Please let me know what you are doing it/how you are doing it!

Thanks,
A
