| vw105:43 UTC13 Sep 2007 | Hi
We are travelling through East Africa and are planning to do a safari in the northern circuit for about 8 days. We have the choice of starting this on either Oct 21 or Oct 29. Can anyone advise which date is likely to the best time to do it.
I know they are only a week apart and wildlife is unpredictable etc but would optimize our chances as much as possible (e.g., is the migration already in kenya and its better to wait a week and see them when they come back closer to Nov?)
Thanks

Greetings!
We would like to tell you about Wildebeest migration timing. Serengeti migration is the very interesting and ocassion to see in Life. This is one of the features that made serengeti to be one of the Wonders of the Tourism World. Timing is very important. Please follow up below information, then I will conclude then.
'Between June and August the migrating animals drink from and eventually cross the Grumeti River, but for many it will be their last drink or their last river crossing. For here in the Grumeti are crocodiles that grow to over five metres in length and weigh more than three-quarters of a tonne. They have jaws so thickset and powerful that they can crush a wildebeest's head like a melon, then tear the body into bloody rags. Usually after yanking the victim into the water. The great majority of wildebeest survive, to cross the Ikoma Controlled Area outside the park then pass through the Serengeti’s Northern Extension, crossing the next challenging river, the Mara, in July or August. Most but not all of the wildebeest and zebras also cross the Kenyan border a little way beyond, to remain in the Maasai Mara Reserve until about mid-October, when they begin the return journey. This takes them down the eastern boundary of the Northern Extension, in and out of the park, and eventually back to the short-grass plains. The 1000 km. trek – for those which make it - is complete. '
So the migration will be starting returning to serengeti in Mid October. So I suggest that you wait until October 30 Or November first dates for arrival in Tanzania.
Accommodation also matters may be in Northern Serengeti like Mbalagheti luxury camps, Mbuzi Mawe, Or you do Comfortable camping safari (budget). This is also possible to migrate and set tents where there is wildebeest.
Feel free to ask any other questions.
