Thinking about cancelling my trip...

Country forums / Africa / Uganda

I already have a flight booked for Uganda in October. I did a lot of research at the time I booked it and Uganda was definitely the country I wanted to visit. However, now I'm having strong doubts. Its not so much the world cup bombings - it's true, that could happen anywhere you go. What I'm concerned about is the escalation that appears to be happening, i.e. additional troops in somalia and the troops going on the offensive paired with the threat of more attacks on uganda. I also don't think it helps that I'm a US citizen. Am I being irrational? Thoughts, opinions?

Only you can decide what is best for you.

I still feel safe traveling in Uganda. You might avoid crowded places in Kampala that are potential soft targets. The rest of the country should be safe. This is a threat that came from outside; Ugandans are generally wonderful people and remain so.

That you are a US citizen makes no difference. In this past incident nobody was checking passports...

Peace,

BB

as a us citizen would you advise people not to visit america after the 9/11 atrocity, the underpants bomber, the recent attempt in time square and americas involvement in iraq and afghanistan. probably not.

In the end, you have to do what you're comfortable with. But do think things through carefully before cancelling because there is an element of danger to travelling ANYWHERE in the world.

I have flights to Uganda booked for September and not for a moment did I think about cancelling - the country needs international support now more than ever. I totally understand why you might feel uncomfortable but then I live in London and I still honestly believe that I'm far more likely to be hit by a terrorist attack in my own town then during a three weeks trip overseas.

Good luck with your decision making and I hope you make it to Uganda someday :)

Just stay out of Kampala and I''m sure everything will be ok, if you look at almost every terrorist attack in the last 30 years they've been in populated areas and almost always capital cities, given that the main reason that most people go to Uganda is the parks and not the cities, it would appear simple.

I have the same problem but for another reason, I plan to cycle in Uganda in september but my knee is buggered and not looking good for a speedy recovery, but thats the only thing that'll stop me going and not a bomb in a city (wasn't planning on going to Kampala anyway..)

My wife & I just returned from 8 weeks backpacking from Kenya to Uganda & down to Tanzania.

Keep your wits about you (like any country) and you'll be absolutely fine.

There is NOTHING to worry about it.

Iraq or Afghanistan might be a problem, but not East Africa.

Enjoy your trip...

Robert.
