| seasidegirl01:50 UTC29 Aug 2007 | Anyone got any thoughts about staying just outside the main drag of the city, eg Camps bay, area somewhere like that> Camps bay was recommended to me but wondering if its rather pricey for what you get.
If I wanted to stay somewhere under 20 mins drive say to the V&A then any recommendations? Ideally looking for self catering places with 2 bedrooms.
I seem to be tying myself in knots over this and spending huge amounts of time looking at everything and getting no-where!

- will you have a car?
- what exactly will you be doing in the area?

| seasidegirl02:58 UTC29 Aug 2007 | Hi Yes we plan to have a car. The idea is to spend our last week in SA in and around cape town, exploring the city and surrounding area.
We have 3 weeks and my (very!) rough plan is to fly to JB, spend some time in Kruger, possibly see Victoria falls, then fly south to Port Elizabeth, hire a car and drive the garden route back towards CT, take in a couple of wineland stops then spend time in and around CT and the cape peninsula.
I don't know if we'll base ourselves in CT and then drive out to winelands or do that before we 'land' in CT.
Basically someone recommended we stay in the burbs and said camps bay was lovely but the friend I'm going with kinda likes nice accommodation and I'm wondering if we might get more for our bucks somewhere else (he's minted - I'm skinted!).
If you're a bit of an expert then advice on ANY of the above welcome :-) esp safari advice as I'm overloaded with info about that too! Thanks princess!!

Camps Bay is popular as its seen as the best of all worlds. Close to the city, but far enough away to feel you are in a small place; 4 beaches; Table Mt at your back; Cape point down the road; great restaurants.....
I had a duff meal and didn't like it. Too much posing.
Do the winelands separately rather than a day trip from CT. Do do the Cape Peninsula tour and Robben Island.

| jane38018:06 UTC29 Aug 2007 | You could have a look at Blouberg Strand as well. It's about a 20 minute drive to the V&A waterfront and it's way cheaper than Camps Bay. You get a lot of self-catering options in Blouberg and most of them have sea view and a stunning Table Mountain view. Camps Bay is definitely a nicer choice, but much pricier. But it also depends on when you go. If you go in Low Season (May-October), then you can get some great deals in Camps Bay as well. But then the weather will obvioulsy not be the best.

| missalaska18:41 UTC29 Aug 2007 | i would mix it up and spend some time say in the city bowl suburbs - eg gardens oranjezicht and then head out to an area on the peninsula. on the false bay side there is plenty accomodation nice places to stay would be st james and kalk bay, muizenberg too an even fish hoek (please no-one groan) the latter has a lot of self catering stuff
you can easily get to the winelands from the false bay side of the peninsula - just head up the R310 and you'll get to Stellebosch no problem
i can't say i like the atmosphere of camps bay - i agree with peterscot about the posing

| ctlocal22:31 UTC29 Aug 2007 | Decent accommodation in Camps Bay comes at a (too) high price in my opinion. And like peterscot and missalaska I think it's way too bling and full of itself.
All the Atlantic seaboard suburbs (Clifton, Bantry Bay, Camps Bay) are pricey because the real estate there is phenomenally expensive.
Sea Point or Green Point are good and central too, without the ludicrous price tag.
Here are the two bedroomed self catering places I usually recommend.
Here's our favourite Garden Route accommodation, along with details of why we like it. And if I were you, I'd plan to sleep a night or two in the Winelands en route from P.E. That'll be better than day trips from CT.
We stayed in Franschhoek a few months back. Details here , along with a good dinner recommendation!

| seasidegirl16:59 UTC30 Aug 2007 | Useful info guys, thanks. It's difficult when you wonder if this will be your only trip to an area and you want to make the most of it. Although from wat I've heard I'll definitely be wanting to come back :-)

| ajphoenix02:21 UTC06 Sep 2007 | I stayed in Tamboerskloof while there, and enjoyed it. It's between the city bowl and Table Mountain, so very close to everything. I have a couple backpackers recommendations if you would like. Not sure if you are staying at backpackers or not.
