Self Drive in Rwanda

Country forums / Africa / Rwanda

Hello there
Has anybody organized a self drive safari around Rwanda? We (2 people) were thinking to rent a car in Kigali and visit the Virungas, Nwgune and Akagera.
The organized safari quotes we have been given so far are way of our budget and do not include permits. Is Rwanda an easy country to self drive? What is the situation in terms of road conditions and safety? what about costs comapred to orgnaised safaris?
We have done a self drive in Namibia 2 years ago and it was a breeze. I wonder if it would it be similar in Rwanda?
Thanks for any feedback
Giorgos

Rwanda is very easy to drive around, the main roads are all good tar and are even signposted. I don't know where you could hire from though, sorry.

Rwanda is a safe country to drive your self as long as you keep the road rules. You will have to keep right, the roads are good. Of course if you organize your safari , it will be much cheaper than using a safari company.
Remember to book your gorilla permits at ealiest

If you havent received a viable option already, you may easily hire a self drive 4x4 vehicle from hire@ugandarwandacarhire.com at very competitive rates. website is www.ugandarwandacarhire.com. We hired a vehicle from them in the summer of 2011 and had a fantastic trip. They have offices in both Rwanda and Uganda. You would be able to get a vehicle to cross borders into Uganda if your prefer. DIY gorilla permits are easy to purchase from ORTPN offices in Kigali. for your budgeting purposes, kindly note that effective June 1st, 2012 gorilla permits prices for Rwanda are going up to US$750 per permit. enjoy your travels to Rwanda, it is an awesomely beautiful country. If you can add the Lake Kivu area to your itinerary, that would complete a memorable trip to the land of a thousand hills.
