Okavango Delta in the rainy season, good idea?Country forums / Africa / Botswana
I want to go to Botswana in January/February (rainy season). Is it a good idea to visit the Okavango Delta during this time? Is it worthwhile? Thanks for your replies.
The rainy season ( green season) in the Okavango is beautiful! These are the calving months so you can experience mothers interacting with their young, also the delta comes alive with the sounds of hundreds of bird species. The rains make for dramatic skies allowing fantastic photographic opportunities. It’s also a lot less expensive to go at this time. Here’s a link to a list of green season travel specials. http://www.botswanatourism.us/travel_specials/green_season.html Hope this Helps! | 1

My pleasure, Unfortunately, you will not know what roads/streets are closed until you come upon them . I would definitely not recommend doing a self drive alone, especially during the rainy season. If you are doing it without a guide I would recommend traveling in a caravan in case one of the vehicles gets stuck. Also, the areas you will be traveling in are very remote and it is difficult to carry all the supplies you will need in one vehicle. To maximize the enjoyment of your trip I would hire a private guide or do a guided mobile safari. Edited by: botswanagirl | 3
Hi, I traveled to the Okavango delta in January two years ago. It was a fantastic experience. People told me I wouldn't see many animals but between there and Namibia we saw absolutely everything. The mokoro ride is great because you can get really close to the hippos and you'll find things like frogs just landing in your lap. We stayed at a campsite called umvuvu and they organised an overnight camping trip into the Delta which you could definitely do in 24 hours. Bring good raingear though. I'm sure you know if you've been to Africa that although it dosen't rain for long each day it is very heavy when it does and if you are in the delta there is nowhere to take cover. | 4
Thank you two very much for all the helpful answers :-) I | 5
