Need basic connectivity info

Country forums / Africa / Kenya

I'll be in Kenya for the month in Sept. First time. Doing public health. I live in the States.

Do US cards work in the ATMs? How hard is it to find access to internet? In general, are connections good enough to upload text and pictures? What kind of connector does Kenya have for electric outlets? Most of my time will be in Machakos region (Eastern Province) in the bush, only a little in Nairobi. Will cars there have cigarette lighter connectors, so I can recharge electronics from the battery when I'm off the grid?

Thanks in advance
AbqDave

Cards from the UK work in ATMs so I would think there would be no problem with cards from the US. A card is a better option than traveller's cheques. There is no shortage of Internet cafes but the quality of the connection varies. I have found it to be a lot better in Nairobi than on the coast. The electric connection outlets are the same as in the UK which I think is different to the US, so you will require an adaptor. Cars should have a cigarette lighter connection.

visa is the best bet for a card, atms are in most towns/cities. loads of internet places in cities (a lot less so in smaller towns) but connections and speed are at best inconsistent. uploading pics could take a while but definitely possible. cars have cigarette lighters, but depends on age of car if they work. pretty sure the electric outlets take 3 pronged plugs (UK version), best idea is to buy the two types of 2 pronged plugs before you leave. these work just about anywhere if you have a bit of cardboard to wedge into the 3rd hole (the safety one).
