Namibia, Botswanna & Zimbabwe - Animal / photography

Country forums / Africa / Namibia

Hi - I have been trawling through posts but alas ... we have been on an overland truck from Nairobi to J/berg. This time we are looking to a trifle more comfortable ride at 60, to go back and spend about 3 weeks travelling through Namibia, Botswanna & Zimbabwe - (my husband is addicted to photography.) I have seen some tours going from Cape Town to Vic Falls but they seem to miss Zimbabwe proper. I would appreciate any feedback and ideas
cheers Mary :)

Do yourself a favor and travel independently.... you can set your own itin and probably get closer to wildlife than in a "Overland bus."

Just work in one direction, would advise:

Rent a car in Windhoek and drive Namibian portion (1st leg).
Either make you way to Maun and book safari starting in Okavango/Moremi/Chobe and ending in Kasane.... or
Catch Intercape bus to Livingstone, cross over to Kasane and see Chobe/Moremi departing from Kasane area (2nd leg).
Get back to Livingstone and transit to Zimbabwe (probably just book safari as opposed to driving yourself).

Tourism is a major draw/industry and you will have multiple options to see all three countries. Just decide if you want to work from west to east or east to west and start accordingly.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks that has given me another direction - for some reason I have a mindset about it being more difficult to 'backpack' in Africa than say our trips in Tibet, India South America etc where we did it as we went.
The car will be the ultimate luxury - Fly into Windhoek and pick up prebooked car? Where would be the car drop off point in Namibia on the way to Maun please? I'm going to Google Kasane etc (thats new to us). Last time we were in Livingstone didn't see Zimbabwe, had this head thing about 'feeding' the regime.
Thanks again for your help from a hot Kiwi summer cheers Mary :)

Maun is considered "gateway to Okavango." After returning rental car in Windhoek, traveling east from Windhoek to Maun can be a task as I believe there is not a "regular" bus service. I have heard that people do it but you would need to do further research to finish that leg. Windhoek to Livingstone is easy.... but bypasses Okavango, and you would then have to double back to Okavango, unless you go from Windhoek -> Livingstone -> Kasane and fly rt from Kasane to Maun on air Botswana (I think $66 each way). Then on return to Kasane, transfer to Livingstone and on to Zimbabwe.

Search forums for Windhoek to Maun transport...... it can be spotty, and if someone has done it recently maybe that portion can be sorted out easily.
