Mozambique -guesthouses

Country forums / Africa / Mozambique

Hi all
I'm planning to visit Mozambique next month for 2.5 weeks. most of the time I plan to be at Tofo. Since it's my first time at Africa I'm not sure what is the "standard" on backpacker's guesthouses.
1. should I bring my own towel and bed sheets?
2. What do you do with your money and passport when you go out of the guesthouse? is it more safe to leave it in the room?

Thanks.

Often cheap guesthouses will have only a single sheet on the bed, so you'll probably want to bring a kanga/sarong or similar to sleep under. You can also use this as a towel when necessary - even if a towel is provided, it will most likely be a rather sad grey rough thing.

I wouldn't leave anything valuable in the room, even in better hotels. If they don't have a safe where you feel comfortable leaving your money & passport, take them with you.

Hey I'm in Tofo now and I've been here for 2 months.

For your money the standard is not good if you're on a tight budget, but Tofo is an amzaing place and this should not put you off- how much time are you going to spend in you room anyway?

Bring a thin sleeping bag if you can as it gets quite cold at, and yes you will need a towel as one is not usually provided. As Kaz said be extra careful with your money, phone ipod etc. Although things very very rarely get stolen it's best being safe. Some of the nicer places have a safe which is safe but some of the others don't. It's best keeping it on you, or do what I do and find a nice place to hide it - namely a hole in the sand!

Anyone who has decided to stay at Fatimas in Tofo please be extra safe, stuff goes missing from here on a daily basis, even from their safe. The dorms are particularly unsafe and NOTHING of any value (even a nice t-shirt) should be left in Fatima's dorms, or even around the restaurant when you're eating.

Thanks Dan & Kaz!
I'm not on a very tight budget, the flights cost me so much that saving extra few $ per night won't change much; I'm looking for a nice and clean guesthouse.
Where do you recommend staying? How much clean and nice guesthouse should cost? I've read some positive feedbacks on Bamboozi, I saw on their web site that they charge 1500Mts per night, it sounds quite expensive for a guesthouse - are those really the prices there?

Another question - should I take most of my on $,Mts or credit cards?

Bring a reasonable amount in dollars. They are easy to change everywhere. Bring a mosquito net...

Hey dan,

I have been travelling for a while now and am heading to tofo for about a month, I am on the last leg of my trip so my budget is pretty tight, where have you been staying for the 2 months and what has it cost you? Thanks

Cheers,
