hey

im currently traveling around morocco and will be heading for mauritania overland in the next couple of weeks. i know that this isnt the easiest thing to do in the world as there is no public transport south of dakhla. i was wondering if anyone has done this journey and has any advice. the guide books are a bit sparse on it. whats the best way to go about getting to nouadhibou or nouakchott. also, whats the deal with visas if you have a british passport. im hoping that you can get them at the boarder. can anyone confirm this.

It is not terribly difficult at all, provided you have time in hand. At the turnoff for Dakhla (by the police checkpoint) you can hitch a lift for NDB. If it is too late in the day continue to Dakhla and the campsite at the entrance to the town is a good bet for meeting overlanders going south.

The visa at the border is now restricted to 7 (I think?) days but you can easily extend it in NKT.

If you can't get a lift at the Dahkla police post then you should be able to get a spot in a van for about 250-300Dh ...

The visa is a nightmare at the moment. You can cross the border for 10euros and get 3 days, the extension has to be done in NKT it seems ... which is a shame; unless you get a full one in Casa on your way south

The visa situation is a pain in the ass at the moment. Getting from Dahkla to Nouadihbou is easy enough. I crossed about 2 weeks ago, using a vehicle from the Hotel Sahara in central Dahkla, but there seem to be plenty of cars going. From Nouadihbou to Nouakchott vehicles go all the time from the "Garage Nouakchott", a place in a sept-place Peugeot or Renault will set you back 3000 Ougiya while the 6 seater Mercedes cost 4000. At the moment, you can only get a 3 day transit visa at the border. This costs 10 Euros or 100 dirham. To extend it, youll have to go to Nouakchott, where a 1 month extension costs between 5000-10000 Ougiya depending on your negotiating skills. It MIGHT be possible to use the train to get to Atar and get your visa extended there, but I wouldnt reccommend this because if you cant get the extension there for whatever reason, your expired visa will be greedily noted at every police, douane, and gendarmie checkpoint between Atar and Nouakchott....
