missing link Tanzania/Ethiopia

Country forums / Africa / Ethiopia

Hi. I'm planning to travel first to Tanzania (with maybe a few sidetrips like Mombasa), then to Ethiopia. And I'm wondering what options might be available to reach Ethiopia, by flight (please give details like routes, companies, frequency and price) or overland, around September.

Sept is a great time to go as you will miss the tourist season.
Sorry can't comment on flights but overland is pretty rough but really worth it.
You should break the journey from Isiolo at Marsabit where you see Samburu people in the markets with their colourful clothes. There is also a huge crater a 5km walk out of town. Hire a small boy who will happily skip along to show you. Its worth it.
Also the Jay Jay centre is an oasis in the desert.
Once you get to Moyale, which you will find is best forgotten you can get a lift easily going north on the tarmac road.
Nairobi to Isiolo, Isiolo to Marsabit and Marsabit to Moyale all are longish day trips.
Cheers.

Thanks, Simsy. So that's at least 3 days from Nairobi to the border with Ethiopia. What can of vehicles pick you up on these roads? And how much do you pay? If some people have other suggestions about flights, overland itineraries and sights, I'd appreciate it. And has anybody tried to get from Moyale to Konso and the Omo valley?

For flying, I would look at Ethiopian Airlines they fly from Dar every day. and they are very cheap

You get trucks that run from Isiolo to Moyale via Marsabit.
The roads are rough so its a slow journey. Stops are at about 4 hour intervals for food and loo.
Sorry mate i cant remember but it was around USD10.

Once you get to moyale there are trucks and a bus to Konso. Once there you are in the action with Arba Minch up the road also for transport options.
The best way to get lifts is simply asking people and they will always put you in contact with the right people.
Cheers.
