Maputo Accommodation

Where to stay in Maputo on a backpacker's budget? The internet reviews of Fatima's and Base Backpackers are dismal...

I thought the Base was great. Would definitely recommend it.

Thanks for the response! That is good to hear.

the Base is definitely better than Fatimas. Also try Maputo Backpackers, I didn't stay there but did and check it out and it seemed nice. Only problem that its a bit far away from the action.

If you don't mind staying a bit out of town, a local friend recommends staying at a pension across the bay (10 minutes ferry) run by a lady called Cecilia . Apparently the view is great and she cooks an amazing crab curry! If I remember the cost was about $12 per night. I can find out her contact details if you're interested.

Talya,
Thank you so much. Would it be possible to get the contact details of the pension? Crab curry and $12/day.... sounds perfect!

Apologies for the very delayed reply...
Cecilia's number is: 828179918

Hi,
I like to share my very bad experience at Fatima's Backpackers with you.
The staff was very unwelcoming and unfriendly, one of them advised me very bad to walk around every where and I got mugged in the daylight. Instead of showing compassion, even they didn't help me with first aid, because I was seriously injured and bleeding.
If by any chance possible, PLEASE DON'T STAY AT FATIMAS!!! I've heard as well, people been robbed in the hostel as well.
Besides it was dirty, the toilet blocked, bad quality food, VERY UNFRIENDLY service,...

I would go everywhere but never again to Fatima's!

If you go to Tofo beach, I can recommend Turtle's cove, very friendly and cozy.

Thanks for the input; I have heard nothing but bad reviews for Fatima's. However I can't get in touch with Base Backpackers. Any suggestions?

About Turtle Cove: we are entering Mozambique after visiting Kruger; do you know of any short cut to Tofo beach?
