Luxor -Aswan by train

Country forums / Africa / Egypt

I plan to take the train from Luxor to Aswan on a Saturday in March. Where can I find accurate information about train times? I'd like to catch an early evening train and understand that one arrives in Luxor sometime between 1700 and 1830.
I'll be travelling with my husband and daughter and can't find a site that will let me book online. Do I buy the tickets on the train? Does anyone know of a way to get tickets organised in advance ( I arrive in Luxor on the same day that I want to travel to Aswan)
Any advice appreciated.

You can check the schedule for the express trains at enr.gov.eg. There aren't any listed which arrive between 1700 and 1830 though - the daytime departure times are 1000, 1825 and 2230 and the travel time is around 3.5 hours.

Unfortunately you can't book online but you can board without a ticket and pay on the train. In fact, this may be the only way to do it as the ticket office at Luxor might refuse to sell you tickets.

I'm sure a Luxor travel agency would buy the tickets for you for a fee but there really isn't any need to buy the tickets in advance.

A problem is that the express trains are en route from Cairo and are frequently late (two to three hours is not uncommon).

This should be useful - lots of info about buying tickets.

No need to buy tickets in advance. When I was there, the ticket office at Aswan would not sell me a ticket (although it wasn't clear whether this was because the train was "full" or because of the restrictions). Either way, I just got on the train and bought a ticket from the conductor when he came round. Lots of free seats in first class. Think there was a very small surcharge (c. EGP10) but no problem buying this way. It's worth paying slightly extra for first class - enormous reclining seats, very comfortable.

About 2 weeks ago we purchased tickets the day before travel at luxor station for a morning train . From what we learn' t the timing was not reliable so the strategie was to buy two first class tickets for the 9 am train .get there early and board the first train down which turned out to be 2nd class , but the second class carriage was better then the first class we had traveled in earlier .All carriages can be classed as " hanging ". The ticket inspector ignored that we were on the wrong train and we arrived in Aswan at 12 .30 .As has been said before you can purchase the tickets on the train with a small extra charge .

Thanks for advice . I think we'll just buy the tickets in the train.
