Is there any way to travel to Libya independently without having to book through a tour company?

Not much of a problem if you are Libyan. I have also heard stories of people crossing the border illegally.
It sounds like you are already on the right track. You do not necessarily have to stay with a group, but you do have to book with a company who will vouch for you.

just arrived back from Libya 2 days ago, incredible fascinating country, people really nice, only beware of some tourist agencies which are really very unprofessional like Emiran Tenere tours in Ghat,still they are some good tourist agencies some are in the lonely planet Libya, no way to do the desert on your own, you need to be sponsored and brought around by a company who has to be the same one who got the visa for you.
