Komatipoort- Tofo distance

Realistically, how long does it take to drive from the border to tofo/ inhambane in a normal 4x4 vehicle?
I've heard so many differing accounts.
Also,
Is Xai Xai a viable overnight stop on the way or is there anything closer to maputo that is still scenic?

Are you staying on the main roads? If yes, Komatipoort to Maputo is about 1 hour. Maputo to Tofo is about 450 kms. Do observe the speed limits: I strongly recommend that you do unless you want to give the Mozambican traffic cops LOTS of money. There is a stretch of about 100 kms just north of Xai Xai that they are in the process of fixing up; this makes it take longer than it ought to take normally. How long? I'd say allow 6 hours. If they've fixed the road by the time you go, it will take less time. Apart from the stretch north of Xai Xai, the road is smooth tarmac all the way.

Xai Xai is fine for an overnight stop (go to the beach though, don't stop in Xai Xai town). Alternativelty, you could find somewhere in Bilene. There are also quite a few lodges signposted off the EN1 at various places. In a 4WD, you could access any one of these.
