Have seen so many times tourists being taken strictly to the first three tombs at the entrance of the Valley of Kings with no time to actually walk inside the valley itself. Or people who were not taken to the temple of Luxor because their guide wanted to take them to a fake alabaster workshop... Plus the explanations provided by guides are sometimes dreadfully unaccurate and dumb.
Would encourage you strongly to visit antic sites on your own,a nd to never enter shops with a guide. The best way to visit Luxor and all the sites on both banks of the Nile is by riding a bicycle. For night sounds and lights, never follow the group as you'll be charged five times the price but hire a cab instead. Egypt as seen with a group is Disneyland...
As for the cruise boat... honestly, these are floating factories intended for basic tourists looking for all-you-can-eat buffet and swimming pools whose water is, well, extremely unhealthy to bathe in. The real Nile experience can come only be renting a felucca or by boarding one of the dahhabiya which provide real quality cruises by having a very limited number of persons on board.
