Kenya suggestions

Country forums / Africa / Kenya

Hi there ,

I will have only 6days in Kenya before i have to cross in to Tanzania ,

I plan mainly to spend them in and aroun Mombasa area , but arrive into Nairobi , is it worth hanging aroung Nairobi for any length of time or better just to head to the mombasa area? Any accom suggestions in both areas.

Many Thanks

Honestly, there's not a lot to do in Nairobi except for socializing and going out. Plus it's winter now so the weather is rather cloudy and grey. Would advise you go to the coast.

Check out Carnivore restaurant and Langata Giraffe Park in Nairobi if you have 1 day. I would suggest visiting the Gedi Ruins and Watamu (1 hour north of Mombasa) while you're on the coast.

hi

i would advice you to do as #1 says you better head off to the coast

The coast is the best option. Diani Beach, an hour's drive south of Mombasa would be a good location. There is a lot of reasonably priced self-catering accomodation. Watamu on the north coast is a lot further (check the map). Mombasa can be easily accessed from Diani Beach and there is a lot to see, notably Fort jesus, the Old Town and Mamba Village. Souveniers are also a lot cheaper in Mombasa.

Short trips around Nairobi:
- You could take a bus to Naivasha (2h + 45min to Gate or nearby lodging and to hiking or biking in Hells Gate (1 day), followed by afternoon tea at Elsamere
- Go further to Longonot or the flamingolake

In Nairobi:
- I really enjoyed the small exhibition at National Archives (city center). Its a small collection with artwork, arms, pictures from all over Africa.
- The National Museum is closed for renovation - you can check if it has opened by the time youre travelling.
- You can check out the cultural centers and artists workshops (see LP) or go out:
1- My Number One: Club Afrique on Saturday.
The place in itself is really cool, wih its seventies-style electric boogie scene, little dancefloor, with seats around and an upperfloor and three bars.
They have a superb Congolese band "Rhumba Japan Band" playing from 10PM-1AM.
The dancing girls are fenomenal (trust me, I can compare with Congo & Brussels). Its not crowded with prostitutes.
2- Casablanca (Millimani, near YaYa Center)
Maroccan stylelounge bar, with excellent (and expensive) cocktails, waterpipes, open fireplace and in weekends dancing, bar and open fire outside. Personally prefer quiet weeknights; weekend quite some prostitues.
3- A Buffet Place : local cheap food stalls & nice cafe. Local middlec class crowd. Good for watching football (TV)
Others: Zimmers (City Center, local, Congolese band); New Florida, MadHouse (Center, lots of prostitutes)
