Johannesberg & Cape Town. Security / Safety Advice needed

Country forums / Africa / South Africa

Hi,

Ill be arriving in Jberg next week, travelling to Capetown by train for a few days then back to Jberg to fly onto Malawi. I'm working in Malawi so had planned to bring my Laptop, Kindle FIre, and DSLR camera with me. When travelling around Africa how safe is it to have objects of this value and how do they usually survive in the heat? I'll have insurance of course but Im worried about leaving them in hostels, etc

Any thoughts etc would be appreciated.

No real problems with that in SA...many (white, and not only) South Africans will carry around expensive i-phones,ipads etc.

Like anywhere else you need to keep on eye on them of course. If you leave it in a bag on the floor,or on an unattended table, you might not find it there when you look again. In a hostel (if you are not taking your camera out with you) you should have a locker,or you can lock the stuff up in your backpack......bring a couple of small padlocks.

Leave the big stuff at home at night, especially in Johannesburg, otherwise its fine.

Thankyou very much both of you

About the heat, if you mean hot weather: I don't think the weather will be so hot in Johannesburg or CT in September. Much hotter in Southern Europe and US in summer!
