Hoedspruit to Johannesburg

Country forums / Africa / South Africa

Dear all,

Sorry if I'm posting double. But I've been reading and reading, but haven't found what I'm looking for. I will be traveling to South Africa in the summer of 2016. I will be volunteering for three weeks near Hoedspruit. My plan is to rent a car and travel from Hoedspruit to Johannesburg In about 8/9 days. I am a female and traveling alone. Any tips to see or do along the way? Maybe any itineraries to share? Or perhaps an alternative way of traveling from Hoedspruit to J'burg (e.g. an overland tour)? Would love to hear from you!

Petra

Hi Petra,

Definitely stop at Graskop, Pilgrim's Rest, the waterfalls, Bourke's Luck Potholes and go to God's Window - it's absolutely breathtaking! There are lots of places to stay in the area. Read more about it here: http://www.southafrica.net/za/en/articles/entry/article-southafrica.net-the-panorama-route. All of these places are accessible with a car and a bit of walking in some cases. You should be fine travelling alone, just avoid driving at night or walking around where there aren't a lot of other tourists. You could also maybe consider stopping in Dullstroom, it's in a beautiful area as well.

I hope this helps! :-)

Thanks Lidia! It'll sure help a lot! So much to see, yet so little time! :)

It's not that far, you can easily drive from Hoespruit to Johannesburg in about 5,5 hours so you should have enough time to see whatever you want (almost).

I would add on the "three rondavels"when you drive the panorama route to see "God's window" and the other places Lidia mentioned.

Stay a night at Panorama view chalets which is just outside Graskop, visit Harrie's Pancakes. And stay a night in Dullstroom, a really cozy place. I like Urban Hip Hotels-The Highlander, nothing urban or hip about it, but really nice and the restaurant is great. Also visit Pickle and Things while you're in Dullstroom, great place nor breakfast or lunch.

Is safari on your list?

Thanks! I indeeed noticed it is a short drive, but I'm having a hard time estimating distance and therefore travel time. So I find it difficult to make an itinerary, since it doesn't have to be a direct journey between Hoespruit and Jo'burg. But I'll add your tip tot Lidia's.

A safari could definitely be on the list, eventhough I'm staying near Kruger. I don't think one could get enough of nature and its beauty...

My dream itinerary would look something like this:

Day 1: Jackalberry Safari Lodge, Thornybush
Day 2: Jackalberry Safari Lodge, Thornybush
Day 3: Jackalberry Safari Lodge, Thornybush
Day 4: Thornybush-Graskop (about 2 hours drive)explore a bit in the Graskop area
Day 5: Graskop-Pilgrims Rest (1,5 hours drive)but stop at a lot of places along the way
Day 6: Pilgrims Rest-Dullstroom (1,5 hour drive)but more panorama route stops
Day 7: Dullstroom-Johannesburg (3 hours drive)

WOW! Thank you so much! The Jackalberry Safari Lodge looks great. This definitely looks like a great itinerary. Thanks again!
